The Fall of the Washington
February 5th 2007 02:24
Michael Gawenda of SMH thinks Democrats current strategy is dishonorable, not because they are playing cat and mouse games with Bush by issuing non-binding resolutions but because they haven't gone directly for the kill and stop the funding for the war. They are not being principled enough.
But in his tirade, there is this little gem:
This sort of political manoeuvring is unexceptional and yet it is disheartening, given the stakes in Iraq. If the Democrats really believe the surge has no chance of working and that American lives are being lost in a hopeless cause, they should move to cut off funding for the war. It's what Congress did in 1974, a move that led to the collapse of the South Vietnamese government and the North's total victory.
Hm, so they are not entirely ignorant of history. Many people accuse of the liberals like Gawenda and his ilk around the world of not getting the terrorist threat. It's not that they not get it. They get it. But like the terrorists their main goal is the downfall of US, particularly as a superpower. It's not that they are passively sliding into defeat by not having a plan. They are actively involved in the pursuit of defeat. Because, the failure of Iraq will mean the fall of the US and the fall of the US means the arrival of the utopia.
