Rumsfeld out, Gates in
November 9th 2006 02:01
The first casualty of the eletions is already in. Rumsfeld has resigned and Bush has nominted former CIA director RObert Gates for the job. It's got mixed reviews from the blogosphere.
From Squiggler:
I went to bed in the wee hours of the morning all depressed and wake up this morning to hear the President announce the appointment of Dr. Robert Gates. This is the most brilliant in-you-face move, absolutely brilliant. All I can say is, to misunderestimate George Bush is to do so at your peril.
Bob Gates knows where ALL the leaking bodies lie at the CIA. He understands Iran perhaps better than anyone. He is the perfect man to deal with the resurrection of Sandinista Daniel Ortega down in Central America. He is a brilliant man and he is a man of the most incredible integrity, pragmatic, and completely non-ideological.
Ladies and gentlemen, hold on to your seats, this is going to be one hell of a ride. My faith is renewed.
Oh, and did I mention what Dr. Gates has been doing recently? Tell me the President isn't on top of things. Gates has been sitting on the Baker/Hamilton Commission as one of the "architects" of the "change of direction" in Iraq. Like I said, brilliant!
And best of all, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid thought they would spend the day crowing and instead they are both nearly speechless. Talk about taking the wind out of their sails!
Pamela at Atlas Shrugs is shattered:
Rumsfeld is going? Now I am depressed. The white flag has been raised. Bush has lost it.
I love Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld was solid. A straight talking brilliant strategist. He had to take a mid 20th century military, decimated and raped for 8 years by a shortsighted horndog (Clinton), and transform it into a lean, agile state of the art 21st centrury military overnight to go after the post modern 21st enemy. An enemy that has no specific territory, operates in the shadows, kills large numbers of civilians with an incomprehensible barbaric blood lust, and has made Iraq the central front on the war on Islamic fundamentalism. Rumsfeld did it, hands tied by the PC mentality that infected the Bush administration.
Why the rollover? Because Iraq was not over in 30 minutes and we couldn't pick up our marbles and go home? This is war buddy. War is tough, get over it.
Watching the White House press corp, they are positively giddy. Ugh.
Rumsfeld is a great man. A great man. The best there ever was.
What a fucking loss.
His replacement is ex-CIA chief Robert Gates - a Bush I guy? Has worked for both parties? Served seven presidents. A Carter era appointee? A member of the Baker-Hamilton Commission? Not good.
