Momentum builds up in the War on Terror
May 1st 2007 19:37
What an extraordinary week it's turning out to be! Around 120 people arrested in Saudi Arabia and terrorist attacks of 9/11 magnitude thwarted. Dirty bomb plots unearthed in London and many suspects either arrested or tried and convicted. Things turning around Anbar province, long the hellhole of Iraq, so dramatically that even the NYT has to recognise it. And now the news that Al-Qaeda head in Iraq has been killed by Sunni groups which only makes it better becuase it shows the terrorists and tribal leaders alliances are splintering.
Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi has not yet sent the Iraq Withdrawal Bill for the President to veto. Maybe she wants to clutch to the only legislation that she has been able to see pass under her watch and one that will be given partial birth abortion by the President's veto pen.
The remarkable thing about it all is that there is a noticeable change in MSM outlets around the world. Spiegel Online and BBC have had intense heartfelt soul-searching articles about anti-Americanism. CNN has asked in a recent interview how to counter the jihadists sophisticated use of media. The asking of such a question itself represents a new kind of maturity I guess. NYT and the BBC are doing some interesting legwork in reporting terrorist developments fairly after blacking those stories out for years.
Why all these developments suddenly? Two things. One, they might be feeling increasingly confident that Democrats are going to win the next elections, so might deign to acknowledge some real world facts rather than indulging in denialist fantasies. Maybe the congress victories last year gave them a break from their continuous denialism stemming from failure. Second, the democrats have demonstrated that they are a nutty far left bunch so the average , regular kind of liberals might be obliged to side with reality now that their side is no longer in a political danger. Or like John Burns of the NYT, they might have just sensed that the Surge represents a real change in affairs.
Whatever be the reason, there is a real shift in Iraq, in Britain and the mainstream media. Lets hope the momentum builds up.
PS: While writing this post, news broke out that the BIg Man himself has said what I've been writing here. He is also going to veto the Iraq Supplemental today.
