EU leaders bow down to Putin
October 21st 2006 07:34
President Putin is in Finland toasted by the leaders of the EU. Any chance the boastful leaders would call Putin’s bluff? Don’t hold your breath. There is no doubt Putin has been a big disappointment. In Putin’s Russia, if you are a big industrialist with opposing political views, you’ll be thrown into a jail and your company will be nationalized. If you’re a journalist who takes a critical stance against the administration, you’ll be murdered by the contract killers. If you’re a small country and want to establish a democracy, you will be cut off from the rest of the world because Mr. Putin thinks you’re nothing better than a colony of the Russian Empire.
Will the EU leaders stand up to this man? Not any chance. They are busy toasting him. Forget lecturing him about human rights and journalist murders, they can’t even bring him to follow on contracts he has signed. Germany’s Merkel who is sensible a leader wanted to press him on the issue but France predictably won’t have it. Chirac boasted last month that his country’s policy won’t be submissive to US. Looks like he has no objections to being submissive to Russia.
