Democrats are piling up excuses for not winning
November 3rd 2006 07:38
Democrats are carefully piling up their talking points, read excuses, in case they lose the mide-term elections in the US.
They have had a pretty orchestrated media effort to build up Democratics momentum and give the impression that Republicans are going to lose control of both the Senate and the Congress. That includes, undereporting Democrat misdemeanors (Kerry, Reid), overstating Republican follies( Foley, Allen, Abramoff) and most of all, making this a referendum on Iraq war and President Bush.
This last strategy has already failed. Democrat candidate Ned Lamont is expected to lose in Connecticut tpo Independet candidate Lieberman. If there is anyone election that was supposed to be a referendum on Bush, it'd have been this. For Lieberman was kicked out of Democratic Party for his pro-war stance and Ned Lamont pushed instead. The fact that Liberman is going to win even after being dumped by his won party and taking an aggressive pro-war stance shows that the Democratic strategy of making these election a referendum on Bush and on Iraq is not working.
But, in case they win, this election is going to be proected as a huge loss for President Bush. But, if they lose, they have some excuses handy.
First, it's the standard blacks have been intimidated line. Pollsters are expecting that African-Americans might break ranks with Democrats in some states at least and vote for Republican candidates. So, over the last week, scattered news reports in prominent media have suggested that blacks are going to be disenfranchised once again.
Now, Washington Post comes up with a voter ID story. The sotry starts with a Democrat nominee being hassled because of a wrond ID. Looks like Republican congressmen never seem to have any of these problems.
They are preparing. Even though, after the relentless mediafest it's pretty much coventional wisdom by now that Republicans are going to lose, looks like Democrats don't believe their own polls and media.
