The Attacks on Blogs

October 30th 2006 05:51
There was a post on one of the Orble blogs saying that the U.S. government is waging a witch hunt against the bloggers. That's, of course, the typical paranoia of imagined events that besets many people today.

Nevertheless, attacks against bloggers are increasing by the day. Not in US but around the world. It is these that we have to be careful about.

First, in that supposed fount of liberalism, Europe. In Spain, a blogger is summoned to court for the crim of supporting Israel. Not to mention the continued harassment of Paul Belien who manages Brussels Journal, the anti-EU blog.

In Russia, even the freedom of mainstream press is eroding so fastly, it is not a wonder that this is happening.

In Greece, a blogger's house was raided and a libel notice served against him, because he linked a satirical piece against a local official.

In China too, satire is a dangerous thing. An unassuming man posted a satirical poem on the internet about a corrupt local officical. When the officical got note of it, he had arrested the man and threatened all his family members and all thsoe who read the blog, that there will be no career promotions for them.

None of these infractions against free speech are news. They are not recorded by mainstream media which is to be expected but they are not even getting support from fellow bloggers, which is surprising. It is these events that we have to worry about, not some phony witchhunt in the US.

The Cat Meat and the White House

October 27th 2006 08:25
What does a mufti who is under pressure to recant some disgusting remarks he made do? Why criticise the White House, of course.

From Yahoo:
After emerging from Friday prayers at Lakemba Mosque, Sheik Alhilali was asked by a media pack whether he would quit over a speech in which he said scantily-dressed women invited rape.

"After we clean the world of the White House first," the sheik said.

Supporters of the sheik cheered and applauded loudly at the comments, which were directed firmly at US President George W Bush.

The sheik has previously described Mr Bush, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prime Minister John Howard as the axis of evil.

Despite calls from within the Islamic community for his resignation, Sheik Alhilali has been assured he has the support of grass-roots Muslims, a supporter said.

The angry criticism leveled at him is a conspiracy by the White House, of course. So, blame Bush and you'll be forgiven for everything.

And did we think that the mufti will be stood down? Nah! He will take a break to Mecca!

Supporter and president of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, is Keysar Trad, says the sheik will not resign but is taking a break which will include a pilgrimage to Mecca.

"Reaction from the grass roots is that we appreciate all the hard work the mufti has put in for the community," Mr Trad said outside Lakemba Mosque, where more than 2,000 Muslims gathered for Friday prayers.

"We're certainly not going to pass judgment on the basis of one comment in which we know his intentions were completely different.

"The grass roots are behind him."

I don't know, we have politicans in this country who have resigned for making inappropriate remarks if they even hint slightest at some kind of bias. But, the omnipotent mullah, a representative of an entire community will not resign for saying that scantily dressed women are like uncovered meat.

The Australian has a great editorial on this reprehensible creature. Sydney Morning Herald is soliciting readers' reactions without offering its own opinion.

Mufti compares women to

October 26th 2006 07:16
I do not want to return to this topic just two days after writing about it but Sheikh Taj Aldin al Hilali’s remarks have brought the issue to the fore once again. Here we were debating whether the veil in itself is a mark of separation and there comes the news from a senior cleric that women who dress provocatively or wear make up are like uncovered meat and should blame themselves if some catty men want to paw at them.

Taken from The Australian:

"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?
"The uncovered meat is the problem.
“If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred”

A hundred and one defenses can be constructed for hijab all of them sounding nice and rational. But, this is what lays at the heart of those who actually practice and promote it and it is this reason that lies behind it. And those of us who are against the hijab, are attacking this primeval thinking behind it. Hijab is only an outward symbol.

Starving Babies of North Korea

October 25th 2006 08:45
BBC has a tedious roundup of North Koreans are going to starve even the minimal sanctions that have been put in place. But it has an interesting slip-up that's worth noting:

The WFP now operates in 13 counties in North Korea, feeding around half of the 1.9 million people it has identified as being in need of food aid.

Is the veil the mark of separation? That’s what Tony Blair called it. A week before Jack Straw, former foreign secretary of Britain, came under fire for suggesting that wearing full-bodied veil called naqib was confronting. Muslim groups predictably reacted with anger and warnings of dire consequences.

I know the veil issue is perennial and keeps coming back. But, there was a sense that this has become a much more heated debate than usual if you looked at the British media in the last two weeks. From being a marginal symbol of assimilation issues, the veil has come to the very core of issue of identity

EU leaders bow down to Putin

October 21st 2006 07:34
President Putin is in Finland toasted by the leaders of the EU. Any chance the boastful leaders would call Putin’s bluff? Don’t hold your breath. There is no doubt Putin has been a big disappointment. In Putin’s Russia, if you are a big industrialist with opposing political views, you’ll be thrown into a jail and your company will be nationalized. If you’re a journalist who takes a critical stance against the administration, you’ll be murdered by the contract killers. If you’re a small country and want to establish a democracy, you will be cut off from the rest of the world because Mr. Putin thinks you’re nothing better than a colony of the Russian Empire.

Will the EU leaders stand up to this man? Not any chance. They are busy toasting him. Forget lecturing him about human rights and journalist murders, they can’t even bring him to follow on contracts he has signed. Germany’s Merkel who is sensible a leader wanted to press him on the issue but France predictably won’t have it. Chirac boasted last month that his country’s policy won’t be submissive to US. Looks like he has no objections to being submissive to Russia

YouTube and Censorship

October 19th 2006 02:49
It looks very innocuous but YouTube is quietly censoring alternative viewpoints. This was going on for some time but it came widely to attention when they yanked off a video of prominent columnist Michelle Malkin. The offending video was in support of free speech in the Danish cartoon affair. When Malkin raised the question on her own website, it was quickly found that there were many people who had been given the same treatment.

It did not stop there. Filmmaker David Zucker made an advertisement critical of Clinton administration which was judged to be inappropriate for electioneering use by the Republican party officials. The video was posted on YouTube instead. The superbly funny video became a big hit but YouTube played spoilsport and tagged the video as inappropriate and then blocked the video
