The Attacks on Blogs
October 30th 2006 05:51
There was a post on one of the Orble blogs saying that the U.S. government is waging a witch hunt against the bloggers. That's, of course, the typical paranoia of imagined events that besets many people today.
Nevertheless, attacks against bloggers are increasing by the day. Not in US but around the world. It is these that we have to be careful about.
First, in that supposed fount of liberalism, Europe. In Spain, a blogger is summoned to court for the crim of supporting Israel. Not to mention the continued harassment of Paul Belien who manages Brussels Journal, the anti-EU blog.
In Russia, even the freedom of mainstream press is eroding so fastly, it is not a wonder that this is happening.
In Greece, a blogger's house was raided and a libel notice served against him, because he linked a satirical piece against a local official.
In China too, satire is a dangerous thing. An unassuming man posted a satirical poem on the internet about a corrupt local officical. When the officical got note of it, he had arrested the man and threatened all his family members and all thsoe who read the blog, that there will be no career promotions for them.
None of these infractions against free speech are news. They are not recorded by mainstream media which is to be expected but they are not even getting support from fellow bloggers, which is surprising. It is these events that we have to worry about, not some phony witchhunt in the US.
